Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

About

One of the most active committees, our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee pushes for fairness and inclusion in our school and community. We have helped diversity the book selections in our classroom libraries and organized events that celebrate the different cultures within our community. Learn more about the exciting work we are doing, and join us.

Meetings

Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month, 8pm ET on Zoom. See the Konstella calendar for details.

Events

We host regular meetups at local parks, as well as help support PTO events like the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Walk and the Caribbean Culture Celebration.

Diverse Books Project

We want all of our students to have the opportunity to read books about characters who resemble them, their families, and their classmates. In 2019, parents embarked on a project to catalog classroom libraries at PS9 to determine what gaps existed in representing our diverse study body. Our books team now works to identify books that would help fill those gaps, share them with our school community, and order them for our classrooms with the help of PTO donations from our generous community. Join the EDI Diverse Books Subcommittee on Konstella to get involved. Here’s our 2021-2022 collection of books lists.

Visionary Quotes

In support of PS9’s culturally responsive-sustaining education goals, we provide a collection of inspiring quotes from visionaries of different cultures and representations. These quotes are read by students during the morning announcements at the school. Here’s our 2021-2022 visionary quotes—read, share, and be inspired!
