Early Childhood

Admission to PS9 for Early Childhood (3K, Pre-K and Kindergarten) is managed centrally by the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) − not at the school level. Each grade has its own application process. Grade-specific information for 3K, Pre-K and Kindergarten applications is available on the NYCPS website. 

Early Childhood admissions is not first come, first serve. All applications submitted by the published deadline are treated the same (based on standard admissions priorities).

Applying to Kindergarten for next year?

Below are the key dates for families applying during the 2024-2025 school year for admission to the 2025-2026 school year. 

  • Tuesday, December 10, 2024: Kindergarten and Kindergarten G&T Application Opens 
  • Friday, January 24, 2025: Kindergarten and Kindergarten G&T Application Closes 
  • Wednesday, April 2, 2025: Kindergarten and Kindergarten G&T Offer Release

Eligibility

Every child in New York City has the right to a free, appropriate, public education. Eligibility for each grade is based upon the year in which a student was born.

Students enter pre-kindergarten in September of the calendar year in which they turn four years old.

For kindergarten, students enter in September of the year in which they turn five. While students are not guaranteed a seat at the school where they attended pre-k, once a child enters kindergarten they can remain at the same school until its final elementary grade. PS9 goes up to grade 5.

How to Apply

The window to apply to is only open for a period of time each spring. Sign up for a MySchools account to prepare for that time and to receive updates about the application process.

During the appropriate application period, families can apply in one of two ways:

Online

Use the MySchools website to apply online in any one of the ten official DOE languages.

 

By phone

Call (718) 935-2009. Interpretation services are available in more than 200 languages for over-the-phone applications. You can ask questions and request information about admissions in any language when you call.

Dual Language

Dual Language Spanish - English Immersion (DL) classes are offered in every grade at PS9. Application to this program for Early Childhood is also done through your MySchools account. Students whose native (or home) language is Spanish are given preference in admission.
